Nursing assistants are high in demand. In long-term care facilities, eighty percent of patient care comes from nursing assistants. More elderly people are staying with family members but need care takers during the day. Local hospitals need caring employees to assists patients with daily care. The Memphis Works nursing assistant program is training people to fill these positions. |
Delores Moden is the instructor of this 8 week program. She has 30 years of nursing experience and has spent the last 10 years teaching the profession. She teaches her students all of the skills that are necessary to become nursing assistants from transporting patients to assisting with daily living activities.
Students learn to accurately take and record vital signs, including pulse, respiration, temperature, and blood pressure. After completing the course, students may take the state certification test, which consists of 72 written questions and performing three skills. Once certified, the graduates may find positions in such areas as hospitals, private homes, assisted living and rehab facilities.
